Police say that at approximately 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 12, officers from the department were called to the 1200 block of West Patrick Street, where they found 73-year-old Frederick resident William Arthur Whitted, Jr. in the roadway after being struck by the truck.

Whitted was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to investigators, it has been determined that a 2014 Mack garbage truck registered to BFI Waste Services in Hagerstown, was leaving a shopping center when the driver made a right turn onto West Patrick Street when it struck Whitted in the motorized wheelchair as he was crossing the road at the entrance of the shopping center, ejecting him from the device.

Officials noted that the driver of the truck remained at the scene and is cooperating with the department.

Following his death, tributes celebrating Whitted's life poured in on social media from friends and family.

"Uncle Billy's legacy lives on in the lessons he imparted to us," his niece posted. "He taught us the value of precision and the importance of offering kindness to strangers.

"He was a source of unwavering pride, always celebrating our achievements whether we knew or not. The joy he found in spending time with me and my children will forever be etched into my memory."

Funeral services for Whitted have been scheduled for 10 a.m. on Nov. 2 at Lasting Tributes Cremation & Funeral Care on Bestgate Road in Annapolis.

The Crash Reconstruction Team is still investigating the crash. Anyone with information regarding the incident has been asked to contact Officer Coady by calling (240) 549-4542 or emailing acoady@frederickmdpolice.org.
